Spring Break 2018 New York

For Joshua's senior year, he chose New York City for his spring break trip. We had a wonderful time in New York from March 10 to March 15, 2018.

Our first activity was to attend church in the Mandarin speaking ward. Joshua understood the talks, while Dad and I smiled politely. Hee hee!

The main purpose of our trip was to go to each of the three China Towns in New York and try the dumplings. We rode the subway to Lower Manhatten, to Brooklyn, and the train out to Queens. The Brooklyn dumpling place (shown below) was the winner. Dad found this place online, and it had the most amazing dumplings for about 25 cents each, in a very small, out-of-the way place. It was definitely not fancy, but oh, so yummy!

Our secondary purpose was to see two Broadway plays, Wicked and Phantom of the Opera. Dad watched every week for when tickets went on sale, and on the day of first sale, he booked ours. That meant that we were on the front row!  Can you imagine? We saw the orchestra director sweat.  ha ha! Both of the plays were wonderful! Now we have the piano music, and Josh and I play the songs to remember how much we loved the plays.

Our third priority was to see the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We thought we might find some of our ancestors who came to America through New York, but they came earlier than Ellis Island. Still we hiked to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, and we loved the views!

We also looked at the views from the new Trade Tower Memorial. It was a beautiful building with amazing views, and we were impressed with the memorial for those who lost their lives on September 11.

We tried a few other restaurants to go along with our dumplings. One was Junior's which has the best cheesecake in New York. We tried the strawberry cheesecake and we loved it!

We went to JoAnne's, which is owned by Lady GaGa's family, and we had a wonderful Italian dinner in a very LGBT-friendly restaurant. Very cool!

The week was very cold and rainy. We walked for miles every day in between subway rides and train rides. It was definitely an adventure!

On our last day, we went to a very famous dumpling place, where the servers speak Cantonese. They bring carts with dumplings around from table to table and you point to what you want from the cart. Joshua was soooo nervous because they sprinkle shrimp on everything and we couldn't speak with them in Mandarin. We ate a lot of pineapple cakes and Dad did not have an allergic attack to shrimp. Success!

Our trip to NYC was amazing, and we would do it all again in a heartbeat!

What an amazing trip! I'm so glad you tried all the dumplings and that Dad didn't have an allergic reaction at that last place. It looks like you did a ton of walking! Seeing those two shows on Broadway is incredible! And I love that you have been playing the music on the piano since getting home. Thank you for posting these pictures and stories!
